Janel’s Writing Prompt & June’s Book Giveaway Details

I adore my Golden Retriever, Cooper. He is my writing buddy and almost constant companion. The drive-thru workers at the restaurant where I get my morning coffee know him by name even though they don’t know my name (other than “Cooper’s mom”). He often comes with me to pick my kids up from school. Many of the children recognize us and wave as we pass by in the parking lot. My furry sidekick produces a lot of smiles wherever we go.
Write about someone who has an unusual pet. What if the pet isn’t an animal?
Contest
**From Bridgid** Usually, this is where we’d say: Please add your responses to this prompt in the comment section, or share a link to where you’ve posted your response. This month, we decided to add some incentive to help get your creative juices flowing.
If you share your response to Janel’s writing prompt in the comments, or link to where we can find your response (on your blog, etc.), you’ll be entered to win a copy of The Writer’s Digest Handbook of Magazine Writing. Responses must be a minimum of 50 words, and posted by June 29th at 5pm (P.S.T.). You will earn one entry per response, so feel free to go crazy if the muse is with you.
Those who participate in Janel’s June 17th writing prompt will be able to earn more entries (one per response). Spreading the word won’t earn you extra entries, but it will win you karma. (And we’re all about good writerly karma, right?)
Have fun!

LOL this reminded me that even though I had dogs growing up I kept those white floaty things that used to fall off trees–I don’t know what they are called but everyone used to try to catch them and make wishes on them so I called them wishes. I kept them in a card box. Yes, I was weird. (Still am)

I can’t enter (um, pretty sure that would be cheating), but I can say that this prompt reminds me of a kid I knew who carried his pet rock with him throughout elementary school. Teachers would have to ask him to leave his rock behind for gym class.
He didn’t make many other friends, beyond his pet rock, but that didn’t seem to bother him. If only I could remember the name of his pet rock…

I teach 7th graders so I work in an environment that is ripe with weirdness. Kids write about all sorts of strangeness, either about themselves or someone in their lives. In one story, Kenny wrote, “My grandmother lives on the couch. She never gets off it unless she has to go to the bathroom or get another can of beer out of the bottom drawer of the fridge. She calls it ‘bendover’ beer. She keeps her pet mouse in the couch and when the mouse bites her, she gets off the couch to throw it in the front yard. It’s my job to catch her a new mouse.”

I connected with you on your vacation blog, and now I know why…you’re a Golden Retriever owner! We had one for nearly twelve years, they are the best!
