Tip #3: Write!
Posted by bridgid on | October 3, 2010 | 9 Comments |
This month we’re celebrating you, our fearless readers, by offering 30 days of reading, writing and networking tips. On October 31st we’ll conclude the festivities by giving one lucky reader a copy of the 2011 Writer’s Market and a goodie bag. Learn how to enter here.
Tip #3: Write!
Every third tip is going to be a writing prompt. (Sneaky, right?) Our reasoning is this: you can read all of the blogs you want and network until you turn blue, but what will truly matter is whether or not you are writing.
Write all the time. Keep writing and writing and writing . . . and don’t worry about publishing right away. Writing is a bit like playing an instrument or dancing or acting . . . you have to practice and learn for a long time before you go up in front of people.
We’ve pulled together inspiring prompts to encourage you to write. If you answer our prompts–with a sentence, a paragraph, or a novella–you’ll earn 10 extra entries for our giveaway.
So, what are you waiting for?

That damn exhaust! If it didn’t backfire every time I twisted the key in the ignition, Antonio might still be alive.
Not that I really want him to be alive. I’ve always secretly hoped he would accidentally fall off a cliff during one of his hunting trips, or drive himself into a tree after a night at the bar.
But not in a million years did I think I would be the one to do it. And then one morning, he finally pushed me too far.
It was like the thought controlled the action. The second the idea was there, my hand was already reaching for the gun in my glove box.
I often think if he hadn’t been yelling and sticking his finger in my face, or if his alcohol breath didn’t make be gag, maybe he would’ve lived…at least another day or two.
No one came out to see–since they were so used to the obnoxious bang the same time every morning. Even the yelling was a normal occurrance. What should’ve shocked them was the silence that came the days after. The final peace and quiet that I’m sure my neighbors longed for. But my guilt would never be quieted.
So one last time, they’d hear that damn exhaust, at the same time as my last bullet.

Mama told her to stay away from that boy. She said any boy who drove around like he was some kind of hotshot race car driver was trouble. Mama was right.
Shelley slid across the truck’s seat until she could feel the heat from his body soaking through her sweater and jeans. She slid her hand down his thigh. He turned to her and smiled. She layed her head on his shoulder. He smelled like sweet, freshly mowed hay.
The classic pickup truck was his pride and joy. He worked on its engine and waxed it’s robin egg blue paint. Now they were glued to each other in the front seat of the truck. The engine hummed flawlessly as the farm fields flew past the windows. She twisted the cubic zirconia ring from Walmart on her finger and wondered how much a ceremony would cost at the drive-through wedding chapel in Las Vegas.
