This month we’re celebrating you, our fearless readers, by offering 30 days of reading, writing and networking tips. On October 31st we’ll conclude the festivities by giving one lucky reader a copy of the 2011 Writer’s Market and a goodie bag. Learn how to enter here.
Tip #1: Read The Book Deal: An Inside View of Publishing
With over 40 years of experience–working for publishing giants such as Simon & Schuster and as an editor for literary greats Toni Morrison and Hunter S. Thompson–Alan Rinzler knows a thing or two about the publishing industry. He shares his wisdom (and dry wit) in thoughtful, conversational posts on his blog, The Book Deal: An Inside View of Publishing.
Alan Rinzler doesn’t stick to a strict post schedule or offer giveaways and promotions on The Book Deal. Instead, Rinzler has built his following (650 subscribers through Google Reader alone) by providing five-star content. Rinzler uses his industry connections to ask the questions on all of our minds–Is self-publishing literary suicide?, What comes first, platform or content?–then shares his invaluable finds with those wise enough to read his blog.
Some recent favorites include his post on niche marketing and the reason writers should take up eavesdropping. You’ll notice that each post has garnered many comments, which leads to the best thing about The Book Deal. Although Alan Rinzler’s list of credits make him sound like a publishing deity, his blog is warm and friendly, and shows Rinzler to be genuinely interested in hearing what the non-deities (that’s us) are thinking and experiencing.
