New writers, getting fresh

WriteOnCon & Book Giveaways

Posted by on | August 9, 2010 | 2 Comments |

The past two weeks have seen two conferences I consider the epitome of awesome. First, the Romance Writer’s of America met in Orlando, and then, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators met in Los Angeles. Let’s just say…I’ve had a major case of the jealousies.

Lucky for me (and other cheap-o writers), I was able to live vicariously through detailed reports (a.k.a. blog posts) from writers such as Shenandoah Writers Online coordinator Ricki Schultz (Part I and Part II), who taught a class at the RWA conference, and a new SWO member, Carolina Valdez Miller. (Thanks, ladies!)

All of that longing and angst (sorry) made the news of two amazing contests and one phenomenal conference that much more appreciated.

Last Will of Moira Leahy, Cover ImageFirst, Therese Walsh, author of The Last Will of Moira Leahy, is celebrating her book’s trade paperback release with a HUGE book giveaway. The giveaway includes over 100 books from 51 authors. Some of my favorites include The Map of True Places by Brunonia Barry and The Love Goddess’s Cooking School by Melissa Senate (which hasn’t even been released yet!). Entering is easy. Simply “Like” Therese’s author page on Facebook, then follow the link to the contest guidelines. Make sure you jump on this contest–the deadline for entries is August 10th at 12am (EST).

As if that weren’t awesome enough, Carolina Valdez Miller extended the deadline for her multi-title book giveaway. She’s offering seven (seven!) of her advanced reader copies, including a signed copy of Matched by Ally Condie. To enter, simply fill out the form Carolina provides on her blog. Extra entries can be earned by subscribing to her blog and spreading the word about the contest. The contest ends August 15th, so visit Carolina’s blog as soon as possible for a chance to win.

Possibly the most exciting thing happening this week is WriteOnCon, a free conference for kid lit writers. (Yes, free!) The conference was started by a group of writers who wanted to create a high-quality conference for writers unable to afford traditional conferences. (I know, I wanted to hug them all when I found out about it.)

WriteOnCon

The conference will be held from August 10th (tomorrow) until August 12th. To register, visit the website and follow the directions in this post. Scheduled events include chats with industry experts on everything from craft and business of writing to query letter critiques from literary agents in the industry. You can even hear SWO’s Jodi Meadows, the Query Letter Queen,  discuss query letters (3:00 pm on Tuesday).

One of the best things about this conference (besides the whole free thing) is that the blogs and vlogs will be posted on the WriteOnCon website, and can be accessed at any time. So, if you miss, say, author Josh Berk’s 6 a.m. welcome keynote, you can watch it when you get the time. How brilliant is that?

Feel free to comment with your own giveaway contest or event. You can also send me an email at bridgid AT inkyfreshpress DOT com. If you win, we’d love to hear about it!
