New writers, getting fresh

July Book Giveaway Winner!

Posted by on | August 1, 2010 | 3 Comments |

Thanks to Cameron and Jasmine for entering our July contest! In case you missed their paragraphs on voice, here are their entries:

From Cameron:

The voice of a God is how I shall describe it. When I create my characters, I have all the power of their lives in my hands. I put them through trails and tribulations and joyful times. I give them their character pros, cons, and ambitious.

And from Jasmine:

Ah, the tricky voice. I’ve spent many, many hours trying to ‘find my voice’ and I’ve come to this conclusion: it all depends on the story I’m writing. I do really well with dark, gritty emotions. Give me heartbreak and I’ll deliver every time, but a casual chat among friends? Forget it.
And I really like using the setting, like the weather or local landmarks to mirror what a character is feeling. For example, in this one story of mine, the town was built around a hollow tree, and every character was hollow in some aspect.

We decided to skip the voting and go straight to random selection. The winner is…

Cameron!

Congratulations, Cameron!

Cameron won a signed copy of Bree Despain’s The Dark Divine, a selection of Seattle chocolates and an interview on Inky Fresh Press.

Thank you to everyone who checked out the contest. Also, thanks to Bree Despain for the signed copy of her book. Be sure to stop by her site or check out The Dark Divine if you get a chance!

We’ll be holding another book giveaway contest in the near future. What kind of contest would you like to see? Are there any books you’d like to suggest for the giveaway?

Some agents hosts contests where you have to write a 100 word or less story featuring specific words (random words the agent selects). I love those contests! Prizes – books, including books on writing, maybe small gift card (even five dollars) or hey – just winning!

Great suggestion. Thanks, Cat! I like the idea of a prompt. Plus, who doesn’t love gift cards? :)
