Contest: Writer’s Digest Popular Fiction Awards

I promise I didn’t set out to promote yet another contest put out by a magazine, but when this landed in my email this morning, I knew it had to be featured. Although, to be fair, Writer’s Digest is much, much more than a magazine. The magazine itself is pretty sweet, but have you checked out the website? I can spend hours clicking through the articles; I love going there when I’m having a block. (Yeah, I totally succumb to every distraction there is. Procrastination is my middle name. But what a place to procrastinate, right?) Even if you’re not up for the contest, definitely check out the website.
The contest itself looks really cool, there’s something for everyone. The categories include romance, mystery/crime fiction, science fiction/fantasy, thriller/suspense and horror. You can enter as many times and in as many different categories as you would like (and have time for) with the entry fee for each being $20. Manuscripts need to be under 4,000 words, can be sent via regular mail or digitally, and are due by November 1, 2010.
Writer’s Digest will award a Grand Prize winner, first prize winner in each of the five writing categories and honorable mentions. Grand Prize wins $2500 cash, $100 in Writer’s Digest books, the 2011 Novel & Short Stories Writer’s Market and a trip to the Writer’s Digest Conference. (I bet that last one got your attention, Bridgid.
)
I’m thinking if I can get my act together, I might try this one. Short stories seem really appealing right now, probably because my (mostly non-existent) novel is feeling pretty overwhelming. Anyone else feel that way?
