Contest: Real Simple Third Annual Life Lessons Essay Contest

In my post about Glamour Magazine’s “My Real-Life Story” essay contest (are any of you participating?) I mentioned another magazine I love, Real Simple. Not only do I love this magazine for all of the great everyday advice (I need all the help I can get, I’m not exactly housewife of the year material here.) but it’s a really beautiful magazine. The use of lots of white coupled with simple layouts make for a very visually appealing read.
Real Simple’s Third Annual Essay Contest is along the same vein as the Glamour Essay Contest, so if you’re into the memoir-ish writing, this will be right up your alley. The parameters are a bit more specific as far as what they want you to write about. The prompt is: “I never thought I’d…” What comes to mind when you read that? Do you have a life changing event you never thought would happen? It can be something completely dramatic, like climbing Mt Everest, to the seemingly mundane, like switching careers.
Head on over to the contest page for all of the specs on this contest and two read the previous winner’s essays.
And a question for you: Which do you find easier, writing fiction, or non-fiction? I’ve always thought of myself as a ‘fiction’ kind of girl, but these contests are very intriguing to me.

For me, writing fiction is easier. I figured this out while attempting to write memoir. It was far more challenging to be honest than I thought it would be!
Thanks for the contest, Kate!
