Contest: Arts & Letters Competition

inky219smArts & Letters is a journal produced biannually by the Georgia College and State University MFA program.   The Journal includes short story fiction, poetry, drama and creative non-fiction, as well as a creative mentor interview series and a world translation series.

The Arts & Letters Prizescompetition offers publication and a $1000 (U.S.) Prize for winners in: Fiction (Short Story), Poetry, Drama (One-Act Play), and Creative Nonfiction (Essay)…The prizes also offer an opportunity that’s rare among literary competitions: Our winners attend (expenses paid) special programs in their honor on the GCSU campus and in the Milledgeville community, where they also give a public reading of their work.

Wow.

You are allowed to enter multiple pieces of work, paying the $15 entry fee for each separate submission.  Also, (this is pretty exciting, in my opinion) the $15 entry fee goes towards a year subscription to the journal (issues in fall and spring)! If you enter more than one time, the subsequent subscriptions received can be gifted to anyone of your choosing.  (Note: for international applicants only one issue per entry will be sent, due to the high cost of shipping.)

Submissions need to be postmarked by March 15 and winners are usually announced in late June/early July.  Only hardcopy submissions are accepted.  Please see the contest guidelines for the specifics on how to enter. (Special information for international applicants can be found at the bottom of this page as well.)

Check out the excerpts from the current issue: fiction- Pamela Gullard, non-fiction-Gilad Elbom and poetry- Kelly Cherry. There are also excerpts from the back issues (see the lower right-hand corner of each issue page).

Good Luck!

Thanks for the contest information, Kate! I especially like that your entry fee covers a subscription. Lovely!
